Christmas in Watertown

by James Smith

If you watch your local news, you may have heard something about “Christmas in Watertown”. If you don’t watch news, you can click on this 7News link and take a look. (I’ll wait right here.)

You might be wondering what this really is, and why we’re doing it.

I could give you the easy answer. We’re a church, so…you know, Christmas, Jesus, people…if you’re a duck, you quack. If you’re a church, you do Christmas-y things on Christmas. That’s not really helpful, though.

So what’s really going on here?

Glad you asked. We have a vision for what Christmas could be, right here in Watertown.

What if Christmas was an invitation to the entire community to slow down, take a pause from all the “normal stuff” and share something really fantastic, together. On purpose. Something unifying. Something we might not do any other time all year long.

What if we took the time, not just to celebrate what happened then, but we celebrated what’s happening now because of it, and what it can mean for us going forward.

Wait, did you forget that there is actual, real good happening right now in our community because of the impact of Jesus?

There is.

I know it’s easy to forget. We pay more attention to what’s going wrong than what’s going right. We may never even think about how things could be. It’s human nature. But truth is, there’s a lot going right in our community, right now. It may not always be announced or written about. In fact, more often than not, it isn’t. But I’m confident that if it suddenly wasn’t there, we would definitely miss it. And so much of that good has its origin in the moment that Jesus not-so-subtly interrupted the world. The event with the greatest singular influence of any in history.

That’s why we’re inviting the community to share Christmas. Because when we look backward and see what happened, we’re inspired. And then when we speed forward to “now” and see great things that are still happening…we’re only more inspired. Our hope is that everyone who comes leaves inspired. Wondering how God might use their lives in this place we call the North Country.

Oh, and yes, we’re trying to raise money so we can surprise-gift a really giving member of our community. Yes, we’re really going to do that. Why? Because it really is a lesson in satisfaction to give. Jesus spoke the truth. And when you add in that you’re taking care of someone who is already giving.

Never been part of something like this? This is your big chance. and donate to the cause. Of course, you might not feel comfortable giving with a group of people you’ve never met before. And we get that. But even if you don’t, you should come to Christmas in Watertown just to witness it. You may see something that will stay with you for years to come.

Have I convinced you to come? Whew, I tried. Go to and click on the “Event Details” link. You’ll be taken to a page where you can “register” with your e-mail address and the number of people you’re planning to bring. The cocoa is on. Your seat’ll be saved. See you there!
